Italians/1. Isola delle Femmine

Isola delle Femmine, Palermo, Italy - 2 August 2010. From the iPhone series. Italians/1. Locals at the beach of Isola delle Femmina, a coast town that confines with Palermo. The name of the town, that can be translated in English as Females' Island, refers to the uninhabited island that lies in front of the town territory. The etymology of the name is uncertain: a story claims the origins of the name from a females' only prison supposedly located in the island in the 16th century. (©2010 Gianni Cipriano)
